MUSEE CHAGALL

A unique opportunity to dine amidst works of art

Marc Chagall Museum is a national museum dedicated to the painter’s work.

In 1969, the Minister of Culture, André Malraux, decided to build a museum to preserve the Biblical Message after his donation to the State. It began in 1970 on a vast plot offered by the City of Nice, where a ruined villa of the beginning of the century was built.

Chagall follows the project with interest: it is he who asks that an auditorium be part of the planned rooms. He also wants to enrich the building by adding the auditorium’s stained glass windows and a mosaic that changes the museum’s circulation axes.

In 1973, the artist was present for the inauguration of the national museum Message Biblique Marc Chagall, with André Malraux and the Minister of Culture at the time, Maurice Druon.

Until his death in 1985, Marc Chagall accompanied the first years of the institution’s life. He was present at the opening of exhibitions and, thanks to his friendly relations, launched a prestigious concert policy.

New acquisitions gradually enriched the collections and, thanks to the support of the painter’s heirs, the museum became a full-fledged monograph, testifying both to the spirituality of the artist’s work and to its inclusion in the artistic currents of the 20th century.

It is in the middle of the series of seventeen paintings illustrating the biblical message, painted by Chagall and offered to the French State in 1966 that the Thursday evening dinner will be held preceded by an aperitif in the olive garden located in front of the Museum.
